Evergreen Park (Formerly Evergreen Manor)
11/10/1997
The Legend: Local folklore speaks of a "Skinny Kid" who haunts the grounds of what is now Evergreen Park. Before it was a park, this land was the site of the Huntington County Infirmary (the "Poor Farm" or "Evergreen Manor"), where the county’s destitute and unwanted were sent to live.
According to the legend, and what I heard growing up, a young boy—likely an orphan or a ward of the state—was subjected to brutal abuse by the staff. The story goes that as punishment, they locked him in a cage outside during the dead of winter. He was left exposed to the elements and froze to death, alone in the cold.
The Haunting: Locals say you can still see his ghost near an old bridge close to the site. He isn’t described as a menacing spirit, but a tragic one. He is often seen moving across the bridge, as if he is still trying to escape the Manor or finally find his way home.
Historical Context: The "Evergreen Manor" buildings were demolished in the 1990s, but the site still holds a pauper’s cemetery with many unmarked graves of former residents. The "Skinny Kid" is believed by locals to be a spectral memory of the neglect and suffering that occurred at the Poor Farm.
Experience: I saw the Skinny Kid, almost translucent while driving over the old bridge to east of Evergreen Manor. It was brief, but he was there. Standing on the side of the bridge, almost to the edge where he would have dropped into the water. He was there, kind of illuminated, but not casting light on nearby objects. Hard to describe. I always heard the stories growing up in Huntington. Seemed silly at the time, but a good spooky story. As a teen we would go out there before they tore it down. Definitely some weird energy.
It was definitely a story in the 90s. when I was a teen, but I still, from time to time, hear about him from the younger generation. The details change, but the core remains. People still drive out there. But the legend seems to have diminished somewhat. But a few years ago, a kid going to Huntington North, swears he saw something similar, where the old bridge use to be, with his girlfriend. Take it how you will.
