The mouse was listening

Our old family house
2003

In my old family house that we have long moved away from, my mom and I jointly had several bizarre experiences -- one was a puff of dark smoke/some sort of entity that would linger over the bed in the master bedroom and slowly fade away. Another was a voice calling our names in the living room. Perhaps those incidents could have been caused by a leaky gas stove or something (though we did have carbon monoxide detectors!), the last incident was the most bizarre and unexplainable. I distinctly remember sitting in the kitchen, sipping tea with my mom as we chatted about nothing, as we did. We were talking about how it was nice that our cats' presence in the house kept away pests (not sure why were discussing this, but I think maybe my mom's friend had a rodent issue in their rental house). In fact, we had not seen any pests -- besides perhaps a few spiders here and there -- for the entire ten years we had been living there. As soon as I nodded, I saw a tiny shape appear in the corner of my eye. My mom noticed at the same time and gasped -- it was a MOUSE. A little, very cute mouse, perhaps a juvenile. He seemed to look up at us with no fear, as if to say "we *do* live here, actually!" -- my mom and I laughed at the absurdity of it and the mouse, very casually, trotted away somewhere. We never saw a mouse ever again at that house.
