Camping, #2

Ouachita National Forest
Summer, 2024

This is the second story I got from camping at Lake Ouachita. My Grammy and Grandad have a spot on the lake with cabins. We go every summer to camp for a handful of days, always with an understanding that weird things can and will happen. We are winding down after a long day, probably sunburnt. We sit around one of two fires. My mom, who has a degree in soil science from the University of Arkansas, suggests we listen to the animals. And we all go quiet, content in listening to the frogs and bugs. When we hear something. A screech, almost that of a yowl, not far away either. Imagine the sound of a human woman and a coyote or mountain lion. Maybe even a hyena. Anyways, with a rough idea of how it sounded, I'm sure it's understood why everyone immediately froze, our blood ran cold. I'm tempted to wonder if it was a Skinwalker. It was so eerie and loud. The voice carried through the valley too. We heard one, then another, then three shrieks. "that's not a coyote or mountain lion." my mom says, "... its a frog." Moral of the story, remember that frogs can make some crazy ass noises.
