A Field in England

High Weirdness, Thin Places

JUNE 1, 2019

While cycling in the countryside in June I saw a middle aged man kneeling in an empty field. His back was to me but I could see him tidying something away into a satchel. I thought he could have been a metal detectorist or a geo cacher. He wasn’t holding a metal detector though. He then got up and walked the 100m to his car, which was parked on the other side of the field gate.

Once he had driven away I walked through the bramble hedge and into the field over to the place he had been. I couldn’t see any disturbed earth, just badger fur and hay stubble.

I did some research when I got back and determined:
-There are no geocaches nearby
-He wasn’t facing east so probably wasn’t praying
-The nearby Ridgeway has been used as a cross country route for at least 5000 years
-The equally nearby Harwell Campus has a variety of experimental systems, including a particle accelerator and a nuclear fusion reactor
